Can Hypnosis Help You Lose Weight?

First of all, I’d like to thank Israel for the opportunity to be a guest blogger on this wonderful site he’s created! He has done a super job with it and he’s an inspiration to all of us. Whether you need to lose weight or would just like to be healthier, look around this blog and I’m sure you’ll find some great information to help you reach your goals.

So you may be wondering why Israel invited me to guest blog? Well, here is a brief background. My name is Chris Hoyt and I’ve been blogging for almost a year now. I’m currently trying to keep up with 4 blogs on various subjects, while working full time. One of the blogs I maintain is Self Hypnosis Program. For years, I’ve been fascinated with hypnosis & self hypnosis. I experienced first hand, what hypnosis could do for me when I used it successfully to quit smoking in August of 2003. I actually studied and became a hypnotherapist as well. Having a computer background, I decided to take my interests to the web. I’ve ran across some pretty questionable websites with regards to hypnosis, so one of the main goals of my blog is to provide a professional platform, with which to educate people on the subject of hypnosis and how it can help them. And that’s where I am today.

First off, let me say that I believe all hypnosis is “self hypnosis.” Why? Well, “you” are the one that is really doing all the work during hypnosis. A hypnotist or a hypnosis audio program acts simply as a guide to help you achieve your goals. A person or a CD can’t control you and make you do something you don’t want to do. Many people shun the thought of using hypnosis because they just aren’t sure what it is? A lot of people think it has to do with mind control, because that’s what they’ve seen in the movies. We all experience forms of hypnosis every day, most people just don’t realize it though.

So the real reason Israel asked me to guest blog, was so that I might share some information with regards to hypnosis for weight loss. To help here, I’ll give a brief explanation of how hypnosis works.

When using hypnosis, we’re working with the subconscious mind. That’s the part of your brain where some very important things happen. The subconscious mind is somewhat like a computer. Once information is allowed to enter into the subconscious, it’s stored and dictates behavior according to that information. It accepts information without bias. The following are the functions of the subconscious:

  • Habitual conduct (habits)
  • Reflexes
  • Emotions
  • Memory
  • Involuntary bodily functions (heart beating, breathing, eyes blinking (the things that happen without you having to think about it)
  • So look at these areas that the subconscious controls. If hypnosis is “accessing” and “talking to” the subconscious, it’s easy to see that we
can really do some good work here!

Take habits for instance. How many times do we say something like: “drinking soft drinks during the day is just a habit of mine, I just can’t
    quit”
“I just can’t go to bed at night unless I’ve had my ice cream”
“When we grill burgers, I always eat two, that’s just what I’ve always done”
“I just can’t get into the habit of exercising every day”

You see, our lives are often dictated by our habits! And unfortunately, most of us have way too many bad habits.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we had something working in the background, in our subconscious, that helped us to change those bad habits and replace them with good habits? That’s essentially what hypnosis does! And you are in total control of what you want to change. You’ll never have to worry about doing something that you don’t want to do. Hypnosis can be like putting your habits on autopilot!

I don’t mean to make it sound over-simplistic though. Hypnosis takes some effort on your part. It’s only a “tool” to help you. And you can have a whole toolbox full of wonderful tools, but if you never get them out of the box, you’ll never be able to fix your problem, right? In the same way, you can have a whole shelf full of wonderful hypnosis CD’s, but if you never put the headphones on and listen, they’re not going to help you! It’s said that it takes roughly 30 days to change or create a habit. You should expect to have to listen to a hypnosis audio program for at least 30 days. Most people start to notice changes very quickly, often after the first session, but you should continue to listen to your CD’s for a full month to reinforce these changes or there is a good chance you will revert back to your old ways and habits.

And, bottom line is that not everyone can be successful with hypnosis. I certainly don’t want to discourage anyone from trying it, but I want to be very honest. For various reasons, not everyone will achieve their goals. I’ve had people tell me: “I’d like to get a CD to make my spouse quit smoking.” I’ll usually tell them that their wasting their money if their spouse isn’t aware and agreeable to what their doing. You can’t “make” anyone quit smoking with hypnosis, or lose weight or have more self confidence, or whatever the case may be. A person must “want” and have a “desire” to achieve their goal. When you have that, your chances of hypnosis being successful are tremendously increased!

Hypnosis & self hypnosis is a subject that many thousands of books have been written about, so I can’t even scratch the surface in a blog post. If you feel like self hypnosis could help you, I would encourage you to do some research. I’d like to think that my blog is a good place to start, but it’s only a start. Here’s a bit of advice I’d like to share before I go. If you plan to purchase an audio program for self hypnosis, don’t buy the first product find. Do your homework. Is the program produced by a doctor or at least a well respected company or individual? Do they offer legitimate testimonials? Does the program offer at least a 90 day guarantee? You won’t need a 90 days to see results, but this gives you plenty of time to make sure it works as intended.

I’d like to close by thanking you Israel, once again, for allowing me to blog here today. I wish you continued success on your quest to lose weight and I have every bit of confidence that you will reach all your goals!

Very compelling post. Thanks for the info.

This makes a lot of sense. Any new habit we learn is a form of ‘self-hypnosis’ and any old habit, likewise. Any new learning, in fact, if we care enough to apply it to our lives, is a form of hypnosis.

I just wish I could hypnotise myself to work out at night when I get back to my hotel room, instead of lying on the bed watching TV.

Also, I wish I could hypnotize myself into believing there was a chin bar in my hotel room so I could work out my arms shoulders and lats by chinning. Since there isn’t one, that would take some doing.

Great and keep up the good work!

Hypnosis can help with everything, if it`s not a physiologycal problem

    5. HypnoBustersNo Gravatar says:

From experience we’ve had many positive reviews of our weight loss hypnosis mp3s. The key is that the person wants to change for their own good, not because someone or group wants them to.

Once they think in this manner they will most likely experience a great deal of success with hypnosis.

    6. HypnoJerryNo Gravatar says:

I guess the memory for facts isn`t completely subconscious function.

    7. I would like to re-iterate what Jon, from HypnoBusters, says. The key is in wanting to change. Hypnosis works when you really want it to work and when you are prepared to put 100% into it. It won’t often work if you approach it with an attitude of “I’ll give that a whirl”, but it will work if you make a commitment to yourself to “go for it”.

Look at the success of Paul McKenna’s weight loss system and the independent research stats he has gathered, and you will see how successful hypnosis can be. I too have great testimonials from those who have used my hypnosis weight loss program.

    8. I am a practising hypnotherapist and I have seen the amazing results that people have had using hypnosis. And some of these people have been initially rather sceptical. The key is, as you quite rightly mentioned, that the person has to have the desire to change.

    9. Hypnosis can be VERY POWERFUL if you use it correctly. And yes, it DEFINITELY can help you to lose weight.

    10. John RoyceNo Gravatar says:

Yes, the desire to change is the most important aspect. And yes, hypnotic therapy must be used correctly. However, it’s overly simplistic to think merely “wanting” things to happen will make them happen. Hypnosis will help change habits that took years to develope, but it does take hard work on the mental and physical sides.

    11. Lyn MurphyNo Gravatar says:

Chris is correct in saying that all hypnosis is self hypnosis, no change can happen that doesn’t come from within and the deeper within, the more profound the change.

My clients are amazed at the discoveries they make in hypnotherapy and are often surprised that what comes from their deepest selves is not what their conscious mind was telling them. This unfiltered, un-judged information leads to far quicker results and much accelerated progress toward their goals.

    12. NathanielNo Gravatar says:

Well done for pointing out some home truths there. I also greatly subscribe to the thought all hypnosis is self hypnosis. I have practicing for years, and it s good to see some else who is prepared to break down some of the illusions.
