Motivation and Anxiety

Tired of the gym, tired of days where it seems like more work to get up and go do the workout than the workout takes? Well, sounds like you’ve lost your motivation. Take a 2 minute break, walk to the bathroom, and look at yourself in the mirror.

Don’t like what you see do you? Don’t like a little extra fat, or your arms being smaller than you want, or your pecks not being striated. TOUGH! Quit complaining, and get your ass into the gym. You’re the only person who can change yourself, sitting in front of a computer reading articles all day long will teach you what you need to know. Moving 80lb dumbbells for 12 reps and screaming during your last 4 reps is what makes change. Everyday I read people want workout tips, want to know how to get shredded, or even just lose a little body fat …

And what do they need to hear?

In the end it comes down to the person needing to make the change. When you truly feel that desire to change, to better yourself, and to make every workout a little better than the day before – is when you see these changes. The best way I ever found in the gym to make progress was to track it, and track it down to a T. Keep track of all the exercises you do, how many sets you do, what weights you use, and how many reps you do. Everyday in the gym, prepare yourself to do one better. One rep, two reps, 5 pounds extra, one more pull up – whatever it is, better yourself everyday as that’s the only way to progress.

But … there’s always a but, it really is as easy as that but you also have to workout! The 6 Week Workout is great, yes, it may lead to wonderful gains and you will notice some changes. But stick out the full 6 weeks! I just used that as an example, I don’t really know if there is a miracle 6 Week Workout – but the point here is to stick with it. People change their minds too often to really see how one thing or another affects them, take a minimum of 4 weeks to try out a workout program. Try it, and try your hardest. Changing things every other week, just because you read some hot new article is going to get you nowhere fast.

The B.S. I hear that “you need to give your body new things, you need to change things up” – well yeah, that is true in a sense that your body gets used to things and needs change. But not every other week! After a while, you start to learn your body. How it reacts to carbs before workouts, how much sleep you need to feel rested, how your should break down your meals … but that’s for another time.

So what did we learn? Push yourself a little further with every workout, stick with the program you decide to try, and make the most out of every program by giving it time to work! I’m not sharing secrets here, I’m showing you how!

how much did they charge you to redo your blog? Its cool. I contacted the guy you used and he told me it was going to be $2000 to do a simple css sight, I am now thinking of learning code and css myself.

    • never a bad idea to pick up a language or two. php is easy and will help you with anything web. perl is good as well and seems to come in handy a lot.

hehe, dayummmm. 2K, i doubt it was simple.

Serge, I can pretty much guarantee that your site plan wasn’t “a simple css site” if they were going to charge you $2k. I own a web design and internet marketing agency and $2k is pretty standard for a full website from scratch.

Anyway, thanks for the motivational post… you’re absolutely right, Israel – it doesn’t matter what you’re going to do, you have to just go do it and stick with it. 🙂

One comment on this. As weight lifters, runners, whatever, we all need to learn the difference between being a slacker seeking the easy way out and our body telling us “not today, brother, not today.” Sometimes it is hard to tell, but trust me, transgressing against a body that needs rest can not only be unproductive but also harmful to your progress.

  3. I agree—my biggest problem is getting the motivation to actually get to the gym. Getting ready, putting on shoes, driving there etc etc…but once I’m actually there, everything becomes a lot easier. Sometimes you just need to suck it up and go.

Workouts are great, but I think one should also be very careful with his nutrition. What’s the use of sweating in the gym, if you eat a full box of ice cream at midnight? But if you are conscious and change your eating habits, the gym will perform wonders.

It is great how you grab the truth by the horns. You don’t pretend there is some cure all drug that will make you ripped in a week, you tell people the reality that it always comes back to work, real work. It is refreshing to see someone who promotes losing weight the right way.

  6. It is really wierd how motivation and desire can diappear overnight. I have been religously going to the gym and eating right for about 2 years now and since about a month ago I have just had a really hard time with the cardio and the eating. The working out part I still love and continue to do, its just everything else…sigh.

  7. It all comes down to pain and pleasure. Until the pain of being overweight and out of shape is greater than the pleasure of junk food and inactivity, you’ll never be successful. The day you wake up and say, “I am not going to accept this anymore. I will no longer look or feel like this again”, you will go in and out of diets and exercise programs as much as the wind blows.

I thought having a gym at my building would help – I think I do better being around a lot of people.

  9. Agreed-Sometimes you gotta buck and get to it! Also-Tracking things makes all the difference. Measurement equals results!

  11. Hi Rich
I know when I lost 40lbs in 3 months I had to adjust my diet and exercise. My uncle just supplemented water for portions of food at meal times and he lost 120lbs over six months.

  12. I am 1000% convinced that if you don’t eat you can’t stay fat. However you will get sick. So, I think the technique of eating small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going will be the best addition to some good cardio training and muscle workout routine.

  13. Good advice, losing weight is not about starving yourself, but more about making a calorie deficit by eating small meals throughout the day and introducing a training regime.

  14. Life rewards action…but don’t mistake motion for action…take right, deliberate action and use creative visualization

i think gym is the best solution!

It’s so true, it’s so much harder to get ready and go to the gym then it is to actually work out! The after-work-out-feeling makes it all worth it, so maybe we can use that as a motivation!
