Walking For Lunch, or Any Other Down Time You Have

Want to get in some simple exercise that has great benefits? I have a solution for you…go for walks during your lunch break. It’s way better then sitting around eating. All you have to do is pack some sneakers, or comfortable footwear, and schedule a walk for your lunch hour.

The AARP has a list of benefits that walking provides. Obviously, it is a great way to get in some cardio while enjoying yourself. You can even set up lunch break walking groups with your co-workers. Supporting each other while tackling your health. That’s a cool initiative!

It doesn’t necessarily need to be your lunch break. Maybe it’s the last 15 minutes of your day, or the first 25 minutes. Or maybe it’s right after you get home from work where you go for a walk with your entire family. There really aren’t too many limitations. Just be creative and think up ways to walk. The key take-away here is to walk, no matter when you do it. Just walk. Make it a habit and you will start seeing, and feeling, the benefits.

great stuff. When my wife and I go visit her parents, we try to walk over there. It’s about 2 miles and it is a fun walk. Now that it’s getting cold we’ll have to change our strategy though!

  2. Our work has a walking club, 30 minutes 3 times a week. Good exercise and gets you out of the office.

Taking the stairs is another small change that can make a big difference for a lot of people. People who are very sedentary will actually lose some weight just from taking the stairs instead of the elevator…

This is true in many cases. I know someone that simply started taking the stairs at home in his apartment building and cut out sugar and dropped 20 lbs in a month.

  4. It’s basically a good idea to walk. You can for exapmple walk to work if you live close enough.

I walk to work for 40 minutes every day instead of driving.

    Hey Israel,

This is a great suggestion! I definitely prompted my readers to do the same in a previous article. For some reason, walking just doesn’t strike people as an exercise anymore and it’s a shame because it could very well be one of the best workouts you can do!!

    All the Best,

I don’t know about you guys, but I feel much better when I’m standing. I’m even thinking much better than if I’m sitting in a chair.
And besides, it’s not natural for us to be sitting. We are designed to be either lying down or standing, but not sitting. 🙂

I go for a walk in my lunch I think it helps to leave work for an hour and get some fresh air. Also the walk takes a full hour and I feel loads better after it, hopefully it helps me to lose weight too.

  11. I have a treadmill in my living room which completely eliminates the “I dont have time” excuse. Even if I cant block out an entire hour, I can hop on it for 5 or 10 minutes here and there, and as long as the total is around an hour at the end of the day- Im happy.

  12. My Dad took to walking home from work when my sister turned 16 and began using his car. Even after she grew up, he found the walk so relaxing that he still does so to this day.

  13. Better yet, take a healthy snack/healthy lunch with you and eat while you walk. Kills two birds with one stone. Whenever I need cardio, I mix up a protein shake and take it with me on a walk outside when the weather is nice.. or in the winter I suck it up and hit the treadmill. Love it! You can substitute the protein shake for other things obviously. One of my friends loves carrots, so she eats them for lunch while we walk whenever we go together.

This is a good idea. There is a little grocery store downtown about 6 blocks from my office that I walk to a couple days a week to pick something up for lunch. If it were warmer out I’d make a couple of extra laps around the block.

I used to love walking around downtown. There were a few times that I walked from downtown to uptown, took several hours but was well worth it.

  15. Let me bring walking before launch as habits. You did not tell what benefit you have derived. Let visit the aarp.org for more information.

We can ride bicycle for at least a half an hour per day … it can reduce our extra fat

  17. Ammy, yeah, I was doing that for quite a while… In the UK now though it’s freezing and I hate biking in this weather!

A physical activity like walking for lunch is indeed recommended to make any diet plan or program a success.

  19. i wish i had places to walk around here out in utah, but it is kind of hard during the winter when its snowing outside :/
