Fatso Friday: Amy, You Are Not the Biggest Loser41.2 lbs LOSTso farNovember 16, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 5 comments
Fatso Friday is my new weekly (on Friday’s) random lazy post. Each week I will make a lazy fatso post. It’s not lazy in the typical way of being lazy. I will still be writing the same amount, or more, as I usually do and I will also be putting the same effort into what ever I decide to post about. Sometimes I may find something cool around the internet and link to it. But, it’s lazy in the way of I won’t be sitting down and analyzing what to write about with regard to my weight loss journey until I am blue in the face. Instead, it’s more about other random stuff. I decided to call it fatso because I am a fatso. A lazy fatso.
Now on to this weeks Fatso Friday post. The winner this week is the dismissal of Amy from The Biggest Loser. I am so glad she is gone. She was a manipulative, cry baby, bi-polar, bitch. I don’t know if you noticed, but during the weigh-in, she only smiled when “B” had failed to lose a significant amount of weight and was therefore under the yellow line. Like, c’mon. That’s just evil. Then she has the nerve to bad mouth Isabeau and call her a back stabber. Ha, wasn’t Amy the one that turned her back on the red team and their trainer? Yeh, I thought so.
Anyway, I’m glad she is gone because every time I saw her I would get furious. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy for her weight loss success. I just couldn’t stand her annoying attitude. Good riddance. She was damaging my view of the show.

Am I Too Fat for Health Insurance?41.2 lbs LOSTso farNovember 12, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 108 comments
Last night I rented the movie SiCKO by Michael Moore. I had heard about it a few months ago but didn’t think to go see it at the theater. I usually deem movies DVD worthy then wait for their release to rent them via Block Buster Video. Anyway, I knew what it was about and liked his last movie about 911, so I gave it a shot. It was about the health care system and how the health care industry is making tons of profit and not helping patients.
I must say, watching this movie made me want to move out of the country (since there is no universal health care here in the US of A). I can totally relate with the one person that was denied health insurance coverage due to their high BMI. BMI is a load of crap if you didn’t already know. I first came across BMI issues during bootcamp. But that’s another story. This is about being denied insurance because of my fatness. A couple of years ago I was in search of health insurance for my family. I did some research online and found some sites that I could submit my info to for quotes.
A week or so after submitting all my info I received a letter stating that my family could be covered but I couldn’t because I was considered morbidly obese and of “high risk.” I called them back and gave them the example of a body builder having a high BMI and being in shape. They wouldn’t see my side of the story and I was forced to accept their bull shit reason. I would remain denied health coverage because I was too fat.
The amazing thing about it was that I was actually in pretty decent shape a few years ago when this happened. I was about 250 to 260 lbs and in good shape as far as my cardiovascular system was concerned. I just happened to be a bit heavy, like I have always been. At my height of size feet, six foot one on good days, I was considered by most to be in good shape. Not to the health insurance companies though. They judge you based on BMI (body mass index), which is just absurd. It pisses me off just thinking about it and fuels my healthy weight loss.
I know I am not the only overweight person that has been denied health care coverage. Have any of you been through this? Let me know below.

Fat Man New Design Unleashed41.2 lbs LOSTso farNovember 11, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 13 comments
A few weeks ago I decided to go ahead and get the Fat Man Unleashed redesigned. I enlisted the services of Unique Blog Designs. I decided to go with them after seeing the work they have done for other blogs that I visit. Nate was very cool and personable throughout the entire process. We went through several drafts before finalizing what you see now. I never once got that “stop bugging me” feeling from Nate.
There must have been about six or seven drafts, a couple of color combinations, and several tweaks. Nate uses a cool online tool that let’s you view your drafts and comment directly on the design, pinpointing where you want changes done. That made the whole thing easy for me. My main objective was to have the site designed and stick with that theme for a long time. I usually like simple designs, but in this case I wanted an in your face “BAMMMM” effect. I wanted the fat man to be on steroids and that’s why I went balls out on all of the comments/corrections that I left. The good thing about UBD is that they listen to you when you talk.
These are some of the drafts. The last one is Hyder’s mock up.

I must admit that since I wanted this design to be long lasting, that I decided to test out Hyder from Weborithm. I asked him to do a quick mock up for me and after I paid him he sent me something. I was not terribly impressed with the overall design to be honest, but I did love his concept for the header. The “rays” was his idea, so I asked Nate to incorporate that into his design. Nate did it and the design was officially done. Nate’s header design was good, but I just didn’t feel like it was complete. Combining the two designers ideas gave me exactly what I wanted.
After that Steve, one of the guys that handles the coding at UBD, had to code the theme so that it could be installed on my wordpress. Once he did that we found that there were some bugs caused by a plugin that I had installed. He made the fix and the site was ready for unleashing.
If you are interested in a redesign for your site or blog then contact Unique Blog Designs, if you mention the “Fat Man” you may just get hooked up.
So, what do you think of the new look? Like it, dislike it, did it change your life? Let me know.

My Fat, Happy Buddy George41.2 lbs LOSTso farNovember 8, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 6 comments
I often think back to how happy I thought I was during my non-healthy living days. I would always feel happy when I ate food, or did whatever I wanted. It was all a cover up though. Recently an online friend of mine sent me this email, he gave me permission to post it. I think it is very profound, as it struck a cord with me.
“Beefgut wrote:
OH hey, Israel,
Great to chat with you and learn about your goals, well you will want to hear about my buddy George who is kind of not in the same frame of mind as you, man…
George used to be an athlete back in high school (before I knew him) and played at about 165-180 pounds. He’s 5-10 and has a good musculature. But after college, he started getting more lazy and relaxed, and piling on the weight… now he’s 340, and loves his fastfood too much to quit! The guy is pretty lazy and out of shape too, and I don’t think the cigs he smokes are the healthiest, heh … but he’s comfortable. I tell him that he has to watch his cholesterol and so on, but he just laughs. He had it checked a few years ago and it was 290, god only knows what it is now! He says ‘hey I am a jock’ and nothing can happen.
I’m sure hoping he’s right! Well, that’s a bit of an intro to my fat, happy buddy George… he’d definitely take you out to a Denny’s or something and make sure you ate till you popped. A cheat day never hurt, right?”
That got me thinking about how I was always depressed, but on the outside I would appear happy. I was never really meant to be a fat person, as long as I exercised I could eat whatever I wanted. I used to feel like I was on top of the world before I gained all of the fat weight. I would always go to Taco Bell on Tuesday’s for Taco Tuesdays, two for the price of one. I must admit I did enjoy eating lots of food, still do. I love a delicious meal. I think that in my other life I was a food critic. LOL. But seriously, I was really depressed with my weight and eating habits. I was out of control. I am still working on the effects of all of that, but it’s gotten better.
Can any of you relate with Fat Happy George?

Losing Comment Spam, Gaining Comments41.2 lbs LOSTso farNovember 7, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 22 comments
I have officially received over 1000 spam comments. Luckily I enabled Askimet early on and it has blocked a majority of them. I guess my blog is not only helping me lose fat, but spam too. Darned spammers boil my blood.
That’s pretty darned sweet if you ask me. I have also broken the 1000 comment mark. That’s a big number to me. While about half of it is my responses to comments, that still leaves me with 500 real human comments made. I like responding to most of the comments made. I figured that if you take the time out of your day to comment on my blog, I should take the time to respond. I made it a personal mission to visit as many blogs that can assist me in losing weight as I can and then commenting, thus becoming a part of the community there.

I started this blog to help hold myself accountable and to have the assistance of an entire online world at my disposal. So far so good. It’s been a couple of months and I have lost over 40 lbs, gained some awesome online friends, and learned a lot of things that I can apply to my weight loss journey.
Thanks to all of you that have visited my blog, helped me, and commented. You guys help fuel me!

I Made the 2007 Weblog Awards Finals, Sort Of41.2 lbs LOSTso farNovember 2, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 12 comments
A while back John from John Is Fit decided to nominate himself for a 2007 Weblog Award in the Health Issues blogs section. I copied him and nominated myself too. We were trying to see if one of our blogs would be chosen as a finalist amongst all of the commercially huge doctor, health blogs that are nominated.
John’s blog was chosen as a finalist in the Health Issues blogs category, but I wasn’t. Oh well. At least one of ours was chosen. What’s odd is that I received the most nominations in that category, then John received the second most. I was sure we would both make the Health Issues finals. I was added to the Best of the Rest category though. It’s like the bottom of the barrel. LOL. I guess you can say we both made it. I wish John luck and hope he wins. So go vote for him, and vote for me too. John should be making a post about it soon. Here’s his voting page.
You can vote for my blog here: Vote for Fat Man Unleashed
You can vote once a day from a different computer or IP address. Voting closes on November 8th so get your votes in.

What’s That Weird Taste In My Mouth?41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 22, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 12 comments
Over the last few weeks I have been getting this weird taste in my mouth. I would normally just drink some water and then ignore it. That doesn’t work anymore. The taste is too intense now, and not in a good, rich chocolate cake sort of way. It will only subside after I eat, due to the foods different flavor masking the odd taste.
I have been trying to figure out what it is, but can’t quite put my finger on it. It started occurring after I incorporated more intensity into my work out routine. Around that same time I introduced creatine and amino acids in my post workout shakes. I thought that maybe I wasn’t getting enough hydration, but trust me, I drink tons of water and it doesn’t feel the same as having a dry mouth.
What does it taste like? Well, I think it tastes like the whey protein and glutamine that I drink. The taste is mostly on the underneath, towards the back and sides my tongue. Could it be the protein and glutamine? I don’t think I drink too much of it. Could there be some remnants collecting under my tongue?
What the heck is that weird taste in my mouth? Have you had any similar weird tastes in your mouth? Any professionals out that with any advice?

Perfect Passing and Tough Defense41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 21, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 12 comments
It’s Sunday. You know what Sunday means right? NFL football!
What’s up with Tom Brady beasting and throwing 5 TD passes and almost 300 yards? IN THE FIRST HALF! I hope they keep him in for most of the second half so that he can set some more records. I never thought that he would be doing things like this. I knew that he was capable of playing some high caliber football (he already won 3 Superbowls), but I just always saw him as an efficient, game managing, pass a little and run the ball, do what you need to do to win kind of guy. I never saw him as a Peyton Manning type of guy. Barring any horrific injuries I think the New England Patriots are going undefeated for the year.
Oh, and my New York Giants are winning again. Woohoo! Go Eli, Go Eli. I love it when Eli Manning manages the game and doesn’t try to do anything spectacular. This year he has matured. Finally. All the Giants need to do is play some tough defense and run the ball. Then run play action so that Eli can pass the ball to Plaxico Burress. Speaking of passing, I think that they need to get Jeremy Shockey a lot more involved in the passing game. He has only one touchdown reception this year. That’s really insane for a guy of his caliber. He is a great blocker and all, but the guy can kill you with his receiving game. Throw him the ball dammit!
Wow, I just saw Shockey score, thats his second of the year! Sweet, thank you football gods. Thank you very much.
I can’t wait to see what Adrian Peterson does against the Dallas Cowboys. They guy is the leading candidate for rookie of the year in my opinion. Calvin Johnson is doing okay receiving with the Detroit Lions (he just scored a TD catch as I was writing this), but he hasn’t done the kind of spectacular things like Peterson has with the Minnesota Vikings.
Anyway, enough of my football rant. Time to finish watching the games.

It’s called Daily OM and helps you nature your mind, body, and spirit. Perfect for my inner warrior. I like the daily emails I get from them because they are very motivational and spiritual, as well as calming.
Anyway, check it out. I just checked my email a few minutes ago and it helped me deal with making this post.
Have a good Saturday folks. Peace.

Human Weapon is a Test of Inner Warriorness41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 17, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 12 comments
A buddy put me on to a new show called Human Weapon. The premise of the show is two athletes fly around the world, learn the locations fighting style, and then compete against trained experts in the field. I must say it’s simply amazing. It’s like the best show ever. If I had to make a show it would be this. The inner toughness, as well as outer, that it takes to do what these guys do each week is just so underrated.
Teaching two guys a new fighting style and then testing them by making them fight against experts in the style is simply brilliant. I have it Tivo’d. The hosts of the show are Jason Chambers and Bill Duff. One is a professional mixed-martial-arts fighter and the other is an ex-Pro football player and wrestler. They are the opposite. One is small and fast while the other is big and strong. They both learn fast and have lost most of their showdowns, but give valiant efforts. I love learning about the different disciplines involved in Mauy Thai, Karate, Savate Street-fighting, and the other various fighting styles they learn each week.
I have actually retained some of the skills they mention and plan on using them when necessary. I will borrow from these two guys’ strength and weaknesses. People can learn that if you put your mind (and body) to it, you can do just about anything.
Catch Human Weapon Fridays at 10 PM Eastern on The History Channel.

Weight Loss Tips and Blogs Needed41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 14, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 47 comments
I need some help. Any one with any weight loss tips and blogs that can help me shed some extra weight and adjust to my new lifestyle are encouraged to share them. I am looking for tips and tricks that will assist me in losing some extra fat, gain more muscle, curb my appetite, and so on. Anything, so long as it’s SAFE. I don’t want to put myself in harms way, if you know what I mean. Over the next few weeks I will try out these tips and will report back on what worked and what didn’t work for me.
For now, I have a list of health blogs that I frequent and they occasionally share some weight loss tips and insight that I employ. Sometimes the tips or tricks aren’t spelled out in plain English, but they are there nonetheless. There are times when I just take what I learn from others and make something up that suits me.
