I’m Not The Only Thing Getting In Shape41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 13, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 4 comments
I have decided to get a professional blog redesign. I have been meaning to do so for a while now. When I first started the blog I wasn’t happy with the overall look of it, but I didn’t have the know how to redo it myself. That lead me into making the brain/muscle logo and adding it to the header.
I am so eager to unleash the new design. It’s clean, sleek, and has a BAMMMM effect. I like it and hope it doesn’t turn any one off. I don’t think it will, but you never know. I am a visual person and most of the new elements are visual in nature.
I guess when I finally unveil it I will get feedback on it. I can’t wait.

Don’t Ignore the Man Boobs on My Chest41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 12, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 20 comments
Yes, that’s right. I have man boobs. I may not be proud of them, but I have enough guts to show them off to the world. The only reason I am displaying my man boobs is because I want to feel pressured into losing them. I have had my man boobs, or moobs, for a few years now and I hate them so bad. I used to have boy boobs when I was kid too. Having to find ways to cover them up was one of the worst things in the world.
Then I started working out and they went down. They actually turned into muscle and I was proudly showing off my chest. That was until I let myself go again. Now I am here today with my man boobs, angry as hell for letting myself get to this point. There are certain shirts that I wear that cover them up, but most don’t. I have never entertained the idea of a Bro, a man bra, or of plastic surgery so that’s out of the picture. My only hope is to get in shape and lose these man boobs the old fashioned way.
Please don’t ignore my man boobs. I need the awkwardness and shame that they make me feel. That is the only way I can lose them. I found a site that had a bunch of guys submitting their man boob pictures, but I won’t link to it since it’s really disturbing. These guys embrace their man boobs and get off on it. I think some of them actually have implants. It’s kinda freaky and weird. I’ll give you a hint: It’s a UK domain name for man boobs. Back to the subject at hand: my chest. Mine aren’t as bad a those guys on that site. I can do push ups and bench presses but it feels like they will never go down this time around. I think doing cardio will help reduce them, but not fast enough!!!!!
Is it too late for me? I hope not. I don’t know what I would do if I had to keep my man boobs after I lost the weight. One thing I can’t stand is when I see a skinny guy with man boobs. Like what the heck dude, just do some damn push ups. It’s the most annoying thing in the world. Remember Chandler on Friends? Ugh. If you’re gonna have man boobs at least be fat.
I also want to get rid of my man boobs because of the possibility of developing male breast cancer. Many people think that it’s not as prevalent as it really is. It exists and afflicts many men each year. Getting rid of my man boobs can help me lower my risk of breast cancer and help get my self esteem up. Two birds with one stone. What more can you ask for?

Lose Weight, Gain Dirty Laundry41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 11, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 6 comments
It’s been a few weeks since I started this whole lifestyle change and one thing I noticed was that my dirty laundry has grown tremendously. It’s as if the more I workout, the more dirty clothes I have. It’s nothing major, just something I started noticing as I was doing laundry the other day. More sweat equals more dirty clothes. Pretty simple when you think of it, but most of the time we don’t think of these little things.
Just think. Let’s say you workout twice a day: once in the morning and once at night when you get home. That’s two shirts, two pants/shorts, four socks, and two underwear (add in bras or sports bras if your a woman) that are dirty and that you need to account for in a day. Let’s then say that you do this five times a week. That’s all that times five. So if you do laundry once week, like I do, then that’s about load of clothes just from your working out per week. I don’t know about you but I don’t dirty that much clothes normally, so it kinda effects my bottom line in a way. Having to spend more water, detergent, conditioner, and electricity isn’t something I like to do.
There are a few ways to lessen the heaping mound of dirty laundry that you build up but it sometimes isn’t worth it. For example, you can wear the same shorts and shirt for a couple of days, which is gross. You can also wear the same socks and underwear, but at the risk of a potential fungal bacteria.
I guess when you think about it, it really isn’t all that serious of a matter. I was just bored and having do some laundry so I decided to write about it. Oh well, back to washing my sweaty gym clothes. They don’t seem that nasty when you’re wearing them. Yuck.

Experienced Guys Joining FMU41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 7, 2007 by Israel Lagares | No comments
Well, they aren’t really little, but they are friends. As Fat Man Unleashed continues to grow I wanted to be able to offer different perspectives and views on weight loss and exercise matters. That being said, I invited some folks to post on FMU from time to time.
Both of these guys have years of weight lifting and exercising experience under their belts.
The first is IronGuru. He runs a bodybuilding forum over at IronMass.com. An experienced bodybuilder with over 4 years of bodybuilding, diet, fat loss, nutrition, and supplement experience, he will be debunking myths and giving the real story on miracle supplements and workouts.
The second is Chris, he has his own informative fitness blog at LifeFitnessHealth.com. He is 24 years old and resides in Calgary, Alberta. “I’ve been into this whole body building stuff since I was 19. I used to be overweight, but dropped the weight. I got really into it because I found the process so calculated and premeditated. It also taught me to be more goal oriented, which helped both in the gym and in my daily life.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
From time to time there may be more guest bloggers appearing as I try to make this blog more beneficial for myself and my readers. I learn from what these guys have to say too. I also learn and enjoy the many blogs I subscribe to and read daily. If you are interested in guest blogging on FMU, or would like me to guest post on your blog, shoot me a contact here.
Well, it’s Sunday and I have some football to watch. Go Giants!

My Weight Loss Goal Clothes41.2 lbs LOSTso farOctober 4, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 21 comments
I have had a pair of black jeans size 40 for about 3 years. They are made by Pepe Jeans London. I love that brand. Never worn, ever. I also have a pair of shorts my wife bought me when I was in shape but never wore them either. Those are Pepe too.
This is the year I put them on, that’s one of my goals. I tried putting them on but it was a very tight fit. I had to forcefully pull them up to my waist, and they barely got there. I couldn’t button them. I couldn’t even walk in them. I had to shuffle my feet in order to get the camera in the living room so I could take the picture below. When it was time to take them off I had to peel them off slowly. It was bad. REAL BAD. The fact that I could even pull them up past my knees is amazing. Last time I tried a year ago I wasn’t successful.
I got the idea for this post from Biggest Loser Tuesday night when the trainers presented the contestants with the goal shirts. I had goal shirts and pants before, but none with writing on them. I have always wanted to buy or fit into a certain pair of cloths and these are it. I can’t believe it’s been 3 years. I also have a bunch of shirts I haven’t worn in eons. I have a closet full of clothes that I don’t wear. Sadly I haven’t done anything about it until now. My goal jeans may seem big, but at size 40 they are a perfect fit. I have big thighs and I have always worn size 40 or 42 in order to have a baggy fit around my thighs. I attribute the trait to my mother. Thanks mom.
I was on someone else’s blog the other day and she was talking about letting go of her skinny jeans because she would never be able to wear them again. I don’t agree with that. I say get back in shape and put those jeans on. Don’t concede to the fat. I won’t!

Sleeping is the IT thing on Saturday41.2 lbs LOSTso farSeptember 29, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 15 comments
I woke up today at about 2 PM. That means that I slept for about 14 hours. Damn. That’s a lot of sleep. I only do it on Saturdays. I think it’s because I am so drained from the week so my body tries to make up for it on the weekend. It always shocks me when I wake up so late. I don’t usually plan it so it sorta pisses me off to have lost most of the day.
I have read in some places that too little sleep is bad and too much sleep is bad as well. What the heck? Can those darn scientists make their minds up?! Here is one of the articles I read on the sleep issue, this one is from Medical News Today. I recall a few years ago reading a news paper article about how the body needs to recharge after not getting sufficient rest. It also mentioned something about needing to get REM (Rapid Eye Movement) deep sleep. If not the body stays restless. I know I got my sleep in today.
It’s already 6 PM and I have barely done anything. I haven’t even worked out, but I will as soon as I finish this post. This means I am probably going to be awake all night too. Good thing I rented those Blockbuster movies. Speaking of which, I need to return those before they forcefully make me “buy” them.
OMG, I haven’t even turned on Sportscenter or any of the college football games. I did catch some of last nights South Florida vs. West Virginia game. USF wins again! I am officially a disgrace to all sports fans out there. I sincerely apologize for my lack of commitment.
Anyway, I’m going to keep this short, it’s Saturday and I want to spend some time with the family. Enjoy your Saturday folks.

My Underwear Cuts into My Fat41.2 lbs LOSTso farSeptember 27, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 29 comments
This has been happening to me for as long as I could remember. The elastic waste band of my boxer briefs cuts into the fat around my waist. And I hate it. It hurts and is irritating. Is it me or is it the underwear that I buy? Even some loose fitting boxers tend to eventually cut into my fat.
It reminds me of how the elastic upper parts of socks leave deep grooves on your lower legs at the end of the day. It makes me want to go commando. But I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that so I must suffer. Stupid reasons like this are what make me want to lose weight. It would make my life that much more pleasing to live.
There are times when I have to massage my waist so that the indentation and pain can go away. I am constantly adjusting my underwear so that there isn’t too much pressure put on one spot for too long. There was a period of about a year where I was wearing boxers and the boxers would cut into the fat around my waist and the fat of my thighs. Ugh. That was a pain. I don’t know how overweight women deal with bra straps cutting into their shoulder and back fat. I would not wear bras if I was a big woman. I wouldn’t be able to deal with it.
I don’t really know where I am going with this, but I had to get it off my chest. I know a lot of folks go through this and don’t say anything. Well, there it is. I hate how the elastic band of my underwear cuts into the fat around my waist. I said it.

Fat Man Down, Looking forward to Biggest Loser41.2 lbs LOSTso farSeptember 25, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 15 comments
Hurt My Ankle, No Weight Loss
Ahhhh! I didn’t lose any weight. My initial reaction is to freak out, but considering what has transpired over the last week, I am fine with it. Last week I hurt my ankle slightly. I pulled a ligament in my ankle and had to sit out a few days. I could barely walk without feeling any pain. Then once that was semi healed, my knee began to bother me. I don’t know if it’s at all mental or if my body just needed a few days off. But I have noticed that whenever I go hard on the two a day workouts that my body begins to get aches and pains that I have only felt during my football playing days. That sucks because I feel derailed, although I think this week I will be able to get back on track. I gotta stay strong!
I plan to start off this week with one hard workout a day, supplemented with a light cardio session. I tried jumping rope the other day and it really kicked my butt. My arms couldn’t sustain the turning of the rope and I felt clumsy as I kept stumbling on the rope as I attempted to jump it. Jumping rope has always come easy to me, so seeing what the effects of massive weight gain can have on my body is disturbing and disheartening. We’ve also been planning on going to the park but it’s been raining every afternoon, which eliminates our family park time.
The Biggest Loser - Week 3
After week ones massive weight loss I wasn’t surprised to see many of the participants with lower weigh lost last week. I was shocked that the numbers were really low for some folks though. The Black team keeps kicking butt and I suspect that they won’t be letting up any time soon. Jillian seems to have some monkey on her back. I don’t know why. I really thought that the red team captain was going to be sent home, which would have been a bummer. I like the guy. Why? Because he is huge and an ex-football player. I have a soft spot for jocks. I am looking forward to tonight’s show. I think the black team will be losing someone this week. Let’s see if I am correct on my prediction.
That’s about all I have for now. This non weight loss has set me back on my competition with Jesse, but I think I can bounce back hardcore style next week for our weigh-in. Jesse, I am gonna win. So don’t even try!

Intervention Leads to Insult41.2 lbs LOSTso farSeptember 19, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 9 comments
My mom calls me up and tells me to tune into TLC (The Learning Channel). As I am searching through my Dish TV menu guide she is telling me how awesome this show she is watching is. I was extremely eager to find out what it was, until I saw what it was. It was Inside the Brook Haven Obesity Clinic.
While I do have the show DVRed (or Tivo-ed to you Tivo folks), I wasn’t expecting to hear what my mom was just about to say. She had the nerve to compare me to the people on that show. I am fat and I accept that fact, but I ain’t on the level of the people on the show. I weigh over 300 lbs but she some how forgot that I am not the normal 300 pounder. The patients on the show are morbidly obese and most require some kind of surgery in order to lose the weight. Many of them can’t even perform normal, every day activities without some assistance.
So when my mom calls me up and thinks that I should check myself in to the clinic or get gastric bypass surgery, it pisses me off. I know that she is just trying to care for me, but I don’t like being compared to those folks on the show. I feel like I have been progressing nicely with my weight loss and overall health, but this just makes me feel as though I haven’t.
It’s like I have been delusional or something. As if all my progress is just a figment of my imagination. This is definitely a set back in the morale column. Thanks mom! Now I need to go get angry on my treadmill. Yes, that should work nicely.

Why John Chow is Bad for Blogging41.2 lbs LOSTso farSeptember 15, 2007 by Israel Lagares | 140 comments
I like to keep things related to health and weight loss, but there are times when I just need to vent. So this post is one of those times.
I have been intrigued with blogging since it started becoming popular a few years ago. That’s why I started this blog. I figured I would be able to document my weight loss journey as a way to make myself accountable for my actions. It has been working great. I love blogging, everything about it. Well, except for John Chow and wanna-be bloggers like him.
Being that I am a newbie blogger (this blog is only about 3 months old or so), I scour the internet for information that will help me better my blogging. Whether it is joining MyBlogLog (See my Community to the right), Technorati, or reading up on how to incorporate things into my blogging, I research everything there is to do with blogging.
One of the many sites I have come across during my blog researching is JohnChow.com. At first I figured it would be a useful resource, since he has been blogging for a few years, but then I realized that John Chow is bad for blogging. I am not the only one to realize this: Google, Digg, and a slew of others have criticized and/or penalized his blog.
So why do I think John Chow is bad for blogging? To start off he has taken the blogging out of blogging. What do I mean by that? I mean that he doesn’t just blog to blog about stuff. He now only blogs in order to make money online. His posts aren’t genuine. He gets paid for posting certain things. These certain “things” can make or break other sites. He is extremely biased with his posts. He tends to promote the heck out of things and it’s rather annoying. If there is nothing in it for him he doesn’t blog about it. At any given moment you can check his site at any time and see that he is peddling something.
Another reason why I feel that he is bad for blogging is because he has started this “make money with blogging” craze. Tons upon tons of wanna-be John Chow’s are now making dumb ass blogs about making money online. Don’t they realize that they will not make anywhere near what John Chow makes, if anything at all? They are just trying to be like him and spam the heck out of every single make money blog that there is. A perfect example is JohnCow.com. Yep, that’s right. JohnCow, with a COW. This guy, or as I suspect, couple of guys, are a bunch of young copy cats. Kids actually, that decided to mimic John Chow’s blog. While their posts are more entertaining and “light,” they are just like John Chow’s in that they are all about making money online. There are a slew of other copy cats, but you can find them yourself by just looking at the commentators on their respective blogs.
**EDIT** John Cow just recently had a redesign done. I think it actually looks amazing. It sets the site apart from the rest and I think it will give the site it’s own identity now.
Yet another reason why I can’t stand John Chow is that he is a “make money” whore. He is all about the all mighty dollar. That’s it. All he wants to do is make as much money as he can from his blog. I can’t stand it. Not because I am envious (as you can see my blog is about my weight loss journey), but because all you see on his blog are ads. Tons of them. The first thing you see is ads. It’s like one big advertisement that happens by chance to have some posts on it. He should call his blog “The Ad Blog.” Some ads are okay, but damn bro, cut back on those ads.
I won’t lie, I have the damned blog RSSed, but only to see if he will ever start bettering his blogging. I have hopes that he will return to his original ways of posting genuine posts.
One blog I do like is ShoeMoney.com. The guy is an uber blogger. His blogs are genuine, personal, and entertaining. I don’t have to worry about him trying to sell me on the next big thing. Check his blog out, it’s worth it. Plus the guy was a fat bastard, not unlike myself, and lost weight. Although he did do it with gastric bypass surgery, but nonetheless he lost weight and is in good shape. He has some cool pics too. Well, now that I think of it, I am not as fat as he was. But whatever, check it out anyway.
Shouldn’t blogging be genuine? Blogs came about a few years ago because people wanted their voices heard. They wanted to have a place to say what they felt. If they happened to make a little money then cool. But blogging wasn’t about making money. Blogs weren’t started to get rich off of. I guess John Chow doesn’t care and neither do his readers. They hope he will be their savior and teach them how to make money. Haven’t they realized that if he teaches them all of his tricks that he jeopardizes his own income? Ugh.
John Chow…You are bad for blogging. Period.
