I Walked Around with a Ruptured Appendix for 6 Days
It was unintentional. I wasn’t trying to be a tough guy. I recommend that if you feel any odd pains to go check yourself out ASAP. It started as a small pain on the right side, which I shrugged off as being a mild strain from having worked out. The pain was bearable and rarely occurred. For the next few days it remained the same, an annoying pain in my side that I was able to shrug off. It wasn’t until I got home on Saturday night from seeing Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium with the family that it got really bad. My entire abdomen was in pain so I tried taking a laxative to rid my body of what I thought may be some sort of food poisoning.
Bad idea! The laxative, which I will never take again in my life, caused my stomach to get even worse. Now I had stomach cramps AND side pains. I was unable to sleep. I slept maybe only a total of two hours in 20 to 30 minute increments. That’s when I decided to induce vomiting to get rid of the laxative that was causing me even more pain. For the next 30 minutes I threw up some of the nastiest stuff I have ever seen come out of my mouth. It helped for a bit, but then the pain returned.

It wasn’t until I did some research on WebMD.com that I narrowed it down to being either Appendicitis or some form of intestinal damage. At around 10 am I decided to wake my wife up (she tried to help but was unable to so I asked her to go to bed and rest) and tell her that I was thinking of going to the emergency room. She recommend I go to the Doctors Walk-In Clinic that was nearby. I thought it was a great idea since I don’t have health insurance and the cost to visit them would be about $90. She offered to drive, but me being a hard headed warrior, asked her to stay home with the baby.
So I drove to the clinic and was told by the doctor there that I had “rebound” pain around the appendix and that I should go to the emergency room. I then drove to the hospital and waited for about 15 minutes in emergency before being seen and taken in by the staff. I was told that I would most likely be operated on, but needed to have a Cat Scan before they would know exactly what my condition was. They immediately connected an IV to me and after three hours and drinking some clear fluid that was supposed to help with the scan, I was finally told that I had Acute Appendicitis. They weren’t 100% sure if they were going to need to cut me open or perform a Laparoscopic Appendectomy (also known as an Appendicectomy). During a Laparoscopic operation they make three small incisions and use a camera to guide them. I am happy to report that they did end up performing a Laparoscopic Appendectomy. The doc scared me a bit because he said that if my appendix was ruptured that they would need to cut me open.

He must be really good because afterwards he told me that my appendix was ruptured. I couldn’t stop thinking about my family and leaving them behind. I am not afraid of dying. But I am afraid of not being there for my family, my wife, my beautiful baby girl. I kept on tearing up as I thought about the possibility of losing them. Even now, I am getting teary-eyed as I think of it. It is one of the worst feelings in the world. When the accounting rep. asked me if I had a living will I almost flipped on her ass. Stupid bitch. I know she was doing her job, but damn. From what I have heard people with ruptured appendixes don’t normally survive, especially when the bacteria enters the blood stream. Which happened to me.
This post has gotten way too long, so I am going to cut it short here. I will post the second part of my emergency appendix surgery experience tomorrow. Take care folks. Peace.

Hey there Israel, i read your surgery story, and well first of all i had surgery from exactly the same thing on december 30th thats when i went to the emergency room after being a week with a pain in my right lower abdomen, so i walked in to the emergency room and after like 8 hours they took me in and then all the same procedures as in your story, the talk with the doctor and the surgery consent and the liquids and the scan and all, when i read your story is like reading what i went trough, although i was afraid of dying really afraid to be honest. they told me it was ruptured after the surgery, i was sent home jan 8th so i spent a day or two more than a week at the hospital with lost of pain at all times, that picture of you looks like me at the hospital, WELL ENOUGH OF MY STORY YOU KNOW IT ALL I BET. so i got a question maybe u can answer, ok here it goes: k it has been over a month since the surgery but i still have a pain in my surgery spot everyday it decreases but i cant pick up heavy stuff more likely i wont dare to do so, How long did it took you to be normal again and be able to work out and do activities like biking or so? i would apreciate it if you give me your side of the story as in how long till you were normal again i been searching online but found nothing, till i found your story, thanx man hope you have a minute.
My story:
I was sitting down at my computer and all of a sudden I had a massive pain hit me. It didnt hurt in any particular spot on my stomach. I went to the hospital that night and the doctor sent me home with a stomach virus. After 3 days of unbearable pain and 104 fever, I went back to the hospital. Another doctor caught it and I had the surgery done. I have 3 lap. scars on my stomach along with a 6 inch one because it was too bad to do it lap. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital then went home. The pain from the surgery was bad enough that I had to stay in the bed for several weeks. I ended up going back to the hospital because the surgery area absessed. I stayed another week in the hospital for that. As a result of all of that, I had premature medopause at 27.
Glad you pulled through Isreal!
You were simply just very lucky to of had survived that. If it were me, I would thank God every single day of my life for not letting me die and leave my family behind. I wish that my 8 year old causin, Kevin, would of had the same luck as you with the eruption of his appendix. He was only a kid and didn’t expirience any sort of symptoms until the day that he had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. There doctors told his parents that his appendix had rupture 3 days before he was taken to the hospital. He had sugery. The doctors did everything they could to try and clean his insides and try to repair the damage that the toxins had done. But… nothing had seemed to work. He never woke up after the heart attack. He didn’t pass the reflex test and was pronounced dead. RIP Kevin Carlos Feb 18, 200- June 27, 2008. This proves that this desease (if you can calle it that) respects no age, no relegion and no income status.
I am just now at 2 weeks post op from emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix. I never had any idea how serious of a condition this is and how potentially life threatening. After 5 days in the hospital..3 days walking around trying to get a diagnosis…I am very glad to be here to write about it. A very painful and frightening experience that I don’t hink the average person is informed of. If you suddenly develop symptoms thaqt don’t seem like your typical stomach ache or food poisoining (and they don’t) be seen by a doctor immediately…..it could save your life..
