I Walked Around with a Ruptured Appendix for 6 Days

It was unintentional. I wasn’t trying to be a tough guy. I recommend that if you feel any odd pains to go check yourself out ASAP. It started as a small pain on the right side, which I shrugged off as being a mild strain from having worked out. The pain was bearable and rarely occurred. For the next few days it remained the same, an annoying pain in my side that I was able to shrug off. It wasn’t until I got home on Saturday night from seeing Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium with the family that it got really bad. My entire abdomen was in pain so I tried taking a laxative to rid my body of what I thought may be some sort of food poisoning.

Bad idea! The laxative, which I will never take again in my life, caused my stomach to get even worse. Now I had stomach cramps AND side pains. I was unable to sleep. I slept maybe only a total of two hours in 20 to 30 minute increments. That’s when I decided to induce vomiting to get rid of the laxative that was causing me even more pain. For the next 30 minutes I threw up some of the nastiest stuff I have ever seen come out of my mouth. It helped for a bit, but then the pain returned.

Ruptured Appendix Recovery

It wasn’t until I did some research on WebMD.com that I narrowed it down to being either Appendicitis or some form of intestinal damage. At around 10 am I decided to wake my wife up (she tried to help but was unable to so I asked her to go to bed and rest) and tell her that I was thinking of going to the emergency room. She recommend I go to the Doctors Walk-In Clinic that was nearby. I thought it was a great idea since I don’t have health insurance and the cost to visit them would be about $90. She offered to drive, but me being a hard headed warrior, asked her to stay home with the baby.

So I drove to the clinic and was told by the doctor there that I had “rebound” pain around the appendix and that I should go to the emergency room. I then drove to the hospital and waited for about 15 minutes in emergency before being seen and taken in by the staff. I was told that I would most likely be operated on, but needed to have a Cat Scan before they would know exactly what my condition was. They immediately connected an IV to me and after three hours and drinking some clear fluid that was supposed to help with the scan, I was finally told that I had Acute Appendicitis. They weren’t 100% sure if they were going to need to cut me open or perform a Laparoscopic Appendectomy (also known as an Appendicectomy). During a Laparoscopic operation they make three small incisions and use a camera to guide them. I am happy to report that they did end up performing a Laparoscopic Appendectomy. The doc scared me a bit because he said that if my appendix was ruptured that they would need to cut me open.

Ruptured Appendix Getting Better in bed

He must be really good because afterwards he told me that my appendix was ruptured. I couldn’t stop thinking about my family and leaving them behind. I am not afraid of dying. But I am afraid of not being there for my family, my wife, my beautiful baby girl. I kept on tearing up as I thought about the possibility of losing them. Even now, I am getting teary-eyed as I think of it. It is one of the worst feelings in the world. When the accounting rep. asked me if I had a living will I almost flipped on her ass. Stupid bitch. I know she was doing her job, but damn. From what I have heard people with ruptured appendixes don’t normally survive, especially when the bacteria enters the blood stream. Which happened to me.

This post has gotten way too long, so I am going to cut it short here. I will post the second part of my emergency appendix surgery experience tomorrow. Take care folks. Peace.

Hey there Israel, i read your surgery story, and well first of all i had surgery from exactly the same thing on december 30th thats when i went to the emergency room after being a week with a pain in my right lower abdomen, so i walked in to the emergency room and after like 8 hours they took me in and then all the same procedures as in your story, the talk with the doctor and the surgery consent and the liquids and the scan and all, when i read your story is like reading what i went trough, although i was afraid of dying really afraid to be honest. they told me it was ruptured after the surgery, i was sent home jan 8th so i spent a day or two more than a week at the hospital with lost of pain at all times, that picture of you looks like me at the hospital, WELL ENOUGH OF MY STORY YOU KNOW IT ALL I BET. so i got a question maybe u can answer, ok here it goes: k it has been over a month since the surgery but i still have a pain in my surgery spot everyday it decreases but i cant pick up heavy stuff more likely i wont dare to do so, How long did it took you to be normal again and be able to work out and do activities like biking or so? i would apreciate it if you give me your side of the story as in how long till you were normal again i been searching online but found nothing, till i found your story, thanx man hope you have a minute.

    My story:

I was sitting down at my computer and all of a sudden I had a massive pain hit me. It didnt hurt in any particular spot on my stomach. I went to the hospital that night and the doctor sent me home with a stomach virus. After 3 days of unbearable pain and 104 fever, I went back to the hospital. Another doctor caught it and I had the surgery done. I have 3 lap. scars on my stomach along with a 6 inch one because it was too bad to do it lap. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital then went home. The pain from the surgery was bad enough that I had to stay in the bed for several weeks. I ended up going back to the hospital because the surgery area absessed. I stayed another week in the hospital for that. As a result of all of that, I had premature medopause at 27.

Holy crap Anna – talk to a malpractice attorney ASAP! Because the first ER doctor failed to diagnose the appendicitis – you had a more extensive operation, longer recovery time and suffered premature menopause. Seriously… consult a lawyer.

You were simply just very lucky to of had survived that. If it were me, I would thank God every single day of my life for not letting me die and leave my family behind. I wish that my 8 year old causin, Kevin, would of had the same luck as you with the eruption of his appendix. He was only a kid and didn’t expirience any sort of symptoms until the day that he had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. There doctors told his parents that his appendix had rupture 3 days before he was taken to the hospital. He had sugery. The doctors did everything they could to try and clean his insides and try to repair the damage that the toxins had done. But… nothing had seemed to work. He never woke up after the heart attack. He didn’t pass the reflex test and was pronounced dead. RIP Kevin Carlos Feb 18, 200- June 27, 2008. This proves that this desease (if you can calle it that) respects no age, no relegion and no income status.

I am just now at 2 weeks post op from emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix. I never had any idea how serious of a condition this is and how potentially life threatening. After 5 days in the hospital..3 days walking around trying to get a diagnosis…I am very glad to be here to write about it. A very painful and frightening experience that I don’t hink the average person is informed of. If you suddenly develop symptoms thaqt don’t seem like your typical stomach ache or food poisoining (and they don’t) be seen by a doctor immediately…..it could save your life..

Yes this fella is very lucky, I just got out of the hospital 2 mos ago for the same thing. Mine had ruptured and the dr was very shocked that i had walked into the ER. He told my old lady that if i were to put it off another Day or Two , i would not be here today.

Allthough as of now im still having complications. THey had to cut me open like a stuff pig. Today i have burring and sharp pains from my drain tube to the surgical inssion. The Dr. has me going in towarrow and hopefully ill be ok and not having it be a aftermath of Abseous or tissue infection from the ruptured apendix.

    My story:

I felt like i had the 24 hr flu, I was upcking couldnt pass stules had pains like a cramped musscle along my right groin area. Had very hard time eating, Every time i tryed to eat just one bite of food i felt a pain straight down my chest into my whole stomach. And then after about a week i was felling have way decent. I went to work for 2 days the third day i couldnt move hardly at all. It seemed as if i was having bad case of stomach / groin pains. I then told my old lady that she needs to take me to the ER. We drove in and they rushed me as like i was bleeding to death right there in front of there arms after i told them what pains and expereance i was having. My word to you all is Dont dought your body. I myself olmost went 6ft under. Glad to hear you made it Israel Lagares. Hope things will get better for me here soon.

I suffered from acute appendicitis when I was 9 in Christiphor Columbus day on a monday. But my story will be a bit shoking maybe because they had to do a scan to find out I hate appendicitis. This is my story…

It was late at night and im in the car with my family. All of a sudden I fell pain but towards the middle of my stomache. The pain was as if I had to go to the bathroom. When we got home i was in such pain that I went to bed and tried to sleep. I tried evryhting but the pain was unbearable! My dad went late at night to a nearby pharmacy that was open 24hrs to get Pepto Bismol. I chewed them (they were chewable) and about 15 or 10 minuetes later I just vomit the entire medicine. The next day I went to the hospital as emergency and it took FOREVER! Finally, they take me in and I tell them the story… YADA YADA YADA… And they do several tests. 1- they pushed down on where the appendix was (were it hurt) and asked me if it hurt when they pushed in or when they let go. Most people would hurt when they let go but mine was when they pushed. 2- was if I could lift my right leg. Again, I was perfectly able to. 3- If I could jump. Once again yes I could. And the final test that revealed my “desease” if you want to call it that, was the scan. They sent the information colected to another doctor and the test came back ACUTE APPENDICITIS. I was so scared (i was a kid!!) and i started juming like a crazy maniac and like 3 nurses+my parents had to hold me down and relax me. After 1hr they operated me. The operation is done through the belly button. I had to stay a night in the hospital walking around pretty much evry 8 minuets! I didn’t get any sleep. The next day I ate breakfast there and laid back down on my bed. Then like 3 doctors come (some girls too) and asked me if i wanted to go home i said yes. I spent 2 weeks half myself. After surgery you return to your regular self but you spent 2 weeks not being able to work out of use stairs. I spent the first week with pain. The second wek is till ahd abit of pain but not as much. After that week i was back to normal. It was an experience I will never forget. It was also an experience that made me sad for the reason that I might die. The doctor also said that if I spent another day ignoring the pain, I would have surely died… I wish you all that you don’t have to go through something like this EVER. I am truly lucky and give so much thanks to God. 😀

Well this is the first time I’ve shared something like this online but here goes. I too suffered from a ruptured (perferated appendix). I was ironing when I got terrible cramps, I thought maybe they were really bad menstral cramps. When the pain got really bad I tried going to bed but was up vomiting in no time. After about an hour or two I drove myself to the emergency room. After a quick assessment by the nurse I was asked to wear a mask and wait in the waiting room. During the wait I continued vomit. The pain was excuriating and I was curled up in a ball on a chair. After about a three hour wait I went back to the check in and found aout the wait was still about 5hrs. I asked the girl at the counter what she thought might be the problem and ahe told me it was a very bad flu that was going around. I pressed her and told her I had never been in such pain and have a pretty high pain threshold. She assured me it was a flu the diarrhea would start soon and that it would pass in approx. 72 hrs. I can’t believe to this day I was able to drive home, when I got there I told my husband I had the flu and that it would pass in 72hrs. Thus began the horrible wait. After about 48hrs my husband brought me back to the emergency. This time there was no wait, I was immediately hooked up to an IV and given pain medication and gravol they knew right away what the problem was. after a CT scan to verify the ruptured appendix they inserted an NG tube to drain my stomache, the cat scan showed that my bowel had been ruptured and no longer worked. They were unable to operate because there was such a mess floating around inside. I was a patient of Infectious desease and sugery departments. After about 2 1/2 weeks of no food or water I had a central pick line inserted for nurishment. By this time my veins were collapsing and they could no longer get blood samples on a regular basis. Long story I know but it continues. At this point the pain is unbearable even with all the pain medication that made me feel horrible and on edge and my stomache had grown to the size of a pregnant lady expecing twins. About three weeks in they decided to take a chance and try sugery nothing else seemed to work and fannkly I was begging them to at this point. The sugery required that the open me right up and when they finished they didn’t close because they expected they would have to go back in. My bowels just wouldn’t start working so I kept the NG tube in. About week 3 or 4 they noticed that the infections stuff floating around in my abdomen was starting to attach itself to my organs. I had two what they call pigtails inserted into my abdomen during an ultrasound (I was awake) to drain the infection. Finally after 6 weeks inc. Christmas and New Years in the hospital I was sent home with my central pick line to continue home care. A year later I still felt unwell and noticed that I had alot of pain on my right side and requested another cat scan. Well the results quickly brought me to my next sugery a full hysteroctomy due to complications from the rupture appendix. I am happy to report that what the cat scan showed was not cancer like I was told and I already had two wonderful children so the hysterectomy wasn’t as tramatic as it could have been.

If you feel pain in the right side and it hurts when the pressure is released don’t let anyone tell you you have the flu.

I walked around with a ruptured appendix for months. I was in the hospital April 2007 with diverticulitis. May of 2008, I had a fistula with the colon and my bladder, so they needed to operate and fix up the bladder. When they opened me up, they found that my appendix was ruptured and my right overy was all abcessed over. How I am still alive is pretty amazing. They don’t know exactly when the appendix ruptured. I was in a good amount of pain for a year before they figured out what the problem was.

Hi, Back in 2000 I experienced horrible pain in my abdomen, went to the local emergency room and was diagnosed with block blowel and sent home with a liquid laxative. I believe after taking the laxative is when my appendix ruptured. Things just went from bad to worse and went to another emergency room twice was finally admitted to a hospital. They did every test in the book and after 8 days in the hospital, released me undiagnosed. I continued to become weaker and weaker and then something really horrible happened and I called the doctor and he knew immediately what had happened. My appendix had ruptured 30 days before and I was instructed to go to the hospital immediately. Surgery was performed the next day and all my abdominal organs had to be taken out, cleaned and replaced. No one can believe that I am still alive. Guess the Lord still has something planned for me. I thank God everyday that I am still here.

When I was 12, I was horribly sick for about a week. I remember one night rolling around on the floor screaming as my vision turned red. The flu was going around, so my parents just assumed that I had that, but they said if I wasn’t feeling better the next day they would take me to the hospital. I started to feel better, but over the next 3 months I was constantly sick. I would come home from school 3 days out of the week. I started to see a doctor who tested me with ultrasounds and stomach x-rays but nothing showed up. Eventually, I became so sick I couldn’t get out of bed, so my dad took me to the E.R. They saw that my white blood cell count was off the charts and sent me to the bigger hospital an hour drive away. I stayed at that hospital for 2 days before they sent me by Careflight to UC Davis Medical Center, where after a few days they diagnosed me with a ruptured appendix that had ruptured 3 months back. After a doctor described me as “circling the drain” I went into surgery and had to have my organs cleaned and the remnants of my appendix scooped out. I stayed in the hospital for another week and a half. I have a nice 4 inch scar and an interesting story out of the whole ordeal. Due to these months of my body dealing with the ruptured appendix, my hormones have gotten screwed up and due to issues related to the hormones, have had my gallbladder removed, along with other medical issues. The intestinal issues made it so I had practically no abdominal muscles, so I easily ruptured a disc in my vertebrae that also went undiagnosed for 3 years due to its complicated nature (though not from lack of rigorous testing from many doctors.) But even though I have all these issues that stem from my appendix problems, I am lucky and happy to be alive. Thanks for letting me share my story.

I woke up on Saturday, 2/10/07, with the worst case of nausea I had in my life. I was also really weak, so I spent the day in bed. I woke in the middle of the night with abdonminal pain, and I started vomiting. My dad gave me alcheselzer, and after a couple hours of rocking in pain, I was able to fall back asleep. When I woke up Sunday morning, the nausea was gone and the pain had subsided. I had the illusion that I was feeling better, so I ate breakfast. Shortly after, the pain came back, and started to feel really week and feverish. My parents and I thought I had a stomach virus, and since I suffered from frequent stomach viruses as a child, the best thing I could do was try sleep through the illness (medicines such as Pepto Bismal don’t work for me anymore). By Monday morning, I was in so much pain that I could not stand up straight. I was running a fever and suffering from violent chills. By that time, I realized that something was seriously wrong with me. My mom took me to the doctor, and I was immediately sent to the emergency room because I had all the classic signs of appendicits. The doctors confirmed I did have appendicitis. Unfortunately, that happened to be a day when there a lot of emergency surgeries including 4 other appendicitis cases. I got to the emergency room around 11:30am. I didn’t go into surgery until 9:30pm. My appendix had burst by the time I went into surgery. My anesthesiologist must have messed up the dose of anesthesia because I ended up regaining consciousness while I was still on the operating table. The surgery was finished, but it was not time for me to be concious. It was wierd because at first I heard this girl screaming, then I realized that I was the one screaming and I was screaming because I was in agony. The pain I was in before the surgery (which was a 10 on a 1-10 scale) was nothing compared to the agony I was in at that moment. I was completely aware of everything that was happening around me, but for some reason I could not open my eyes or move any part of my body. I felt the doctors swing me from the operating table to the stretcher. That made the pain even worse. I screamed in agony as the doctors wheeled me over to the recovery room. When I got to the recovery room, I started coughing a hacking cough that nearly ripped opened my stitches. When the nurse finally gave me morphine, the pain subsided, I was able to open my eyes, and I could move again (Thank God I was not paralyzed). I was discharged 3 days later (Valentine’s Day and my parents’ 21st anniversary). It was a slow recovery. My wounds took about 6 weeks to recoveer. I was benched for the rest of my track season which sucked because I had just been cleared to return to track after a 6-month injury. I also became sickly after the surgery. I got frequent colds, and I was constantly fatigued. It took over a year for me to feel 100% again. I thank God that I lived to tell this story. I can’t believe how life-threatening a useless organ can be.

Last year on 5/19/10 my 18 year old son cam home from school (first year of college) complaining of a bad stomach ache. I asked him what did he eat and did he need to use the bathroom. This went on all night. Around 6:00 am on 5/20 we went to the ER and he was quickly diagnosed with food poisioning. I described his pain to the ER doctors that he felt like a worm with 1,000 teeth was eating away at his stomach. We was told to go home get clear liquids, and it will clear up with in a few hours. I went home, got him some clear liguids and watched over him. I watched my baby suffer. On 5/21 I went back to the same ER now he had a temperture of 103.6 and breathing very strange. They immediatly took him in and after running alot of test and taking blood, they discovered his appendix had ruptured sometime within 24 hours. When they opened him up the toxic was so bad that they couldnt close his stomach, and he stopped breathing, and was on life support for 10 days. All of this was 8 days before his 19 birthday. I was told to make final arraingments because he wasnt breathing. But thank God for his Grace and Mercy, he saw it fit and in his will to give me my baby back. We just celebrated his 20th birthday, because his 19th he was on life support. I wouldnt wish this on anyone. But thank God for having the final say. Good luck all.

I am still recovering from my ruptured appendix. Don’t be fooled by pain in your gut. It could kill you. Exactly one month ago today I felt pain on the right side of my belly like none other I had ever experienced before. I was having my period and thought that maybe I was experiencing some form of cramping that I had yet to come to know in this lifetime. Called the “advice nurse” (don’t do this) and was told that I couldn’t be in as much pain as I said ( I had reported a 9 or 10) but that I could go to Urgent Care if I wanted. I’m tough. No big deal. Went to bed and thought I’d just wait it out and that I’d be better the next day. No sleep came to me as I moaned through the night. The next day my partner and I decide I needed to go to Urgent Care. Make our way there at about 2:30 and wait for an HOUR to even be seen-triage nurse doing a crossword puzzle and people with slivers being taken back for medical care. I’m getting pretty pissed off at this point and am telling my mate I want to go. He asks,”what’s up?” and suddenly we have people’s attention and I go back for my diagnosis and the ball is rolling. I wonder if my appendix would have ruptured if I had been seen by a doctor 36 hours earlier? I will never know but I know I’ve been through hell and could have croaked. Knowing what I know now I would go straight to the ER and bi-pass all the rest that only seemed to keep me from getting the help I needed. I had to have drains put in a week after surgery due to infections in the place where my appendix once was and one on my uterus. The drains came out a little over a week ago and I’m still in bed wondering when I will feel better. Soon I hope. Peace.

    Hi.

Recently About 3 months ago. I started feeling the pains as well. After about 2 days of these pains, I went to the hospital. They took my blood sample, the doctor poked around. And then prescribed me expensive pills to buy, and told me to come back in 2 weeks for an x-ray. So next day I get up and walk to get these pills at local pharmacy. I went home and took these pills and was not feeling any better the next day.

And decided that Its time to go back to the hospital. Which case I was asked to take blood samples, and a different doctor telling me I had High white blood cell count. And then preformed x-ray on me.

The Doctor told me, I had a build up of alot of Feces, And then I felt pretty embarrassed that i was filled with feces.. So he prescribed me a laxative, which then I went to the doctors and got a laxative. He told me in 5 days I should be better…
5 days later.. im not feeling any better. I went back to see yet another different doctor. I told her that im pooping, but im not pooping enough to get better. So she gave me a stronger prescription of laxative to get. Then In a few days I should feel better..

So something like 10 days past, And Im not feeling any BETTER.

I go back to the hospital. And then A new doctor, Poked me, and pulled her hand away really quick at my right stomach she asked me if that hurt, and i said yes.

She comes back about 30 minutes later and tells me I have ruptured appendix start me on IV treatment. So for 2 weeks I was admitted. Then Released without any surger…

And even to this day, Its still in me, and Im scared. My specialist has been on holidays this and that and just waiting to see him is awful.

It aches but it isnt a strong aching feeling just that it kinda aches. Off work now. And my poop has not been the same since, and with blood in it, which my specialist knows now.

So im still really upset that, there really is no ambition anymore to help me. I hope i dont have permanent damage,

    Please WRITE ME!

My fiances uncle just died (in his early 40s) from his appendix rupturing. I had no clue that this was such a serious complication. He was in pain for a while and like most men, he shrugged it off as him straining a muscle. It wasn’t until he could no longer take the pain that he went to the emergency room. By then the damage had been done. the appendix had ruptured. He also had his stomach pumped from the puss that formed in it. After two weeks of being in the hospital, the worse news comes on Monday, Labor Day (just the other day), that our beloved, favorite uncle had passed away. They beleive he had went into cardiac arrest (probably found him when they were doing rounds). I figured that since he made it into the hospital that he would eventually be fine. After reading all the stories, I realize how serious this really is. Wish I knew this before and was able to communicate it to him long before the rupture. Woulda, shoulda, coulda never changed the course of history….sighhhh… Rest in Peace Reggie Johnson aka “Phettie” aka “Beast Master” aka “Boom Bash”..Harlem USA…You will be missed terribly and you are loved!

I’m reading this blog because I was googling about ruptured appendices as my daughter is now in the hospital due to this. She’s 10 and came home sick on Tuesday. Wednesday we brought her to the ER due to severe stomach cramps… diagnosis was stomach flu and specifically not appendicitis. From Tuesday until Friday she is laid out on the couch unable move from extreme pain and I have to carry her to the rest room where she can throw up and have diarrhea. It kills me now looking back at what she endured. So on Friday we take her to a different doctor and just like the other stories on here: IV, CT scan and they find the ruptured appendix. The doctor has to cut her open and says it’s the worst case he’s seen in a year and a half. This is my little girl! I haven’t seen her yet since the surgery, but I feel terrible and yet it could have been so much worse so I have to be a little relieved. I just hope all goes well from here on out.

Hey. I’m 17 now, but just a couple months ago when I was 16, I was hit by a sudden abdominal pain. It started first though, with me burping uncontrollably to a point where I was feeling frustrated and tired. I knew that I wasn’t going to school tomorrow, and I was kinda happy cause I was getting my report card that day and I knew it wouldn’t be too pleasant. SO tomorrow morning I found out that I couldn’t move and stuck to my bed. So the ambulance was called in and I was taken to the hospital to be told I had appendicitis, which would’ve ruptured in like 3 days if I hadn’t been taken to hospital. Overall it was a scary incident cause the tremendous pain, diagnosis and surgery were all done under 24 hours. It all goes o show how fast things change. So good luck to all, and stay safe. PeAcE!!

    Hi everyone, i’m Ruby, 19
Sorry for all the pain you guys endured. I found this site looking up this problem because my doctor told me after pressing down on that part of my stomach, that if it started hurting esp. with a fever to immediately go to the E.R. I’m not that emotional, but i teared up reading some of your stories. Hard to believe you can be taken away from your family suddenly for something that many of us -and certainly i, would have ignored as something else. I was there for something else but i guess he noticed it was inflamed. My mom and i have decided to go in early tomorrow.(unless it starts hurting me tonight)I have discomfort there, not pain, but why wait right. Hope i get taken care and everything goes well. I’ll probably post here how it goes but hopefully no story worthy of posting here will take place:) Take care,

My son is 33yrs old and like most of you suffered with serious stomach pain. He thought the pain was stomach poisoning and treated the simptoms with various over the counter medications. At 12:30am in the morning he drove himself to the emergancy at his local hospital and was diagnosised at 4:30am with appendicitis. His CT Scan showed his appendics was intact. When he was finally taken to surgery at 11:30am almost 12hrs after arriving at the hospital. After surgery we were informed the appendix had burst. I am reading this blog to find out what we can expect in the days to come. I am so thankful my wonderful son is alive and doing better by the hour. But, from what I’ve read on other sites their can be unexpected compications later on. From this point forward I will trust my Lord and Savior that my son will recover and lead a productive full life. Prayers and best wishes to you all.

I am 18 and I was playing a basketball game when my LEFT side suddenly started to hurt horribly. I was taken to the ER and was told I had a blockage in my left kidney. They put stints in it and performed surgery. Two weeks after all of that with my kidney, I started to feel sick. My stomach got HUGE! I went to the ER again and they asked me if I was pregnant!!
    No way.
They took CT scans and found out my appendix has ruptured 5 days ago and it was encapsulated. The anti-biotics I was on from my kidney surgery saved me. The poison was literally in a sac and they took out 100 cc’s of puss from my stomach and I watched them do it.
My appendix is still in me. It hurts constantly but they won’t take it out because they’re afraid I would end up with a Clost. bag.
Should I go to a different doctor for a different opinion or is it safer to keep my appendix in me? Will it rupture again?
    Thank you and God Bless.

That doesn’t seem healthy! I woud say go to a different doctor. I’m alive today because of an excellent surgeon who removed my ruptured appendix.

I went through the same thing a couple years ago, but mine was ruptured for two weeks and they did have to cut me open. I hadn’t felt hardly any pain because my appendix was located in a rare place, behind my large intestine. I thought I had the flu. After a week straight of vomiting I went to a walk in clinic. They said it was the flu and sent me home! The next day I was half dead and had a fever of a hundred and four. Finally, at 6 pm they got me into surgery, saying it would only be an hour to an hour and a half, it ended up being almost four hours. I had an abcess the size of a grapefruit in my abdomen, pertonitis (infection of the lining of the stomach), and was septic. I was in the hospital for eleven days. I had early pnumonia and had to have a tube inserted through my nose to my stomach to get rid of all the nasty infection. The surgeon said its amazing I lived. I’m still dealing with complications, but needless to say, thankful to be alive! its always interesting to find that there are actually quite a few people with similar experiences, and it shows just how far medicine has come! A lot of people have gone through so much pain, I hope you all are able to figure out your health problems.

I was had pain through out my stomach and due to this I didnt just feel pain on my side.
At first i thought it was gas pain or food posioning. I took some tums and tried to go to sleep. Then i started vomiting. the pain seemed to get less after i vomitted.
The pain would not go away and then increased as the night went on. I vomitted about three times during the day. I finally could not take the constant annoying pain and woke my husband. I went to the er at 12 midnight.
After being seen and CT scan was done – by this time it was 3:47 the doctor came in and anounced that my appedix ruptured and that i would be going to surgery.
I just had surgery on saturday. I prayed that my appendix didnt rupture because i knew the comlications that would follow.
Good news after surgery I asked my husband if it prayer ruptured and he said no. I was so happy. The power of prayer does work. I pray that you all get better soon and have a speedy recovery.
my appendix was dialated and had an abscess with fluid around it. there is a gardian angel watching out for me.

    Thank You!

Yeah… I had a rupture for like 6+ days and oddly my local GP sent me home with “tummy pains” the day I was later rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

I was lucky to survive… very.

I endured a nasty week in hospital and rather than a keyhole for appendix ended up with a 10″ cut and major pain which I still endure.

Solicitors don’t want to touch the case as it’s not a multimillion dollar open shut for doing nothing type case.

I was in so much pain for so long and ignored by my local GP’s until it was almost too late… and in the end they did nothing. Between Mar-2012 and Early Sep-2012 the pain got so bad I just wanted to die as the doctors just kept ignoring me as if I was making it up.

I didn’t even get an apology for their total neglect and for sending me home when I was basically dying.

My full story is on duckpond… it reads like a disaster movie. About sums my life up.

    You’re lucky.
Mine was inflammed on a friday, burst sunday and I was unaware of this for 5 days.. Consider yourself lucky
I Had my belly opened and cleaned.. and then I got a further infection causing my whole body to swell then had to be re-opened in the same place … And left open.

Im verry lucky to still be here, I don’t think I’v heard a worse case of it than my own, obviously other than death.

      Hi,
My 19.5 year old son was walking around with a contained perf/ruptured appendix 4 or 5 days due to high pain tolerance. He was on IV antibiotics 4 days
then avelox 3 weeks. They never operated. Only drained it once. We have decided not to have an internal appendectomy since appendix likely gone anyway and statistics show non surgical conservative treatment is typically enough in a case such as his where rupture and pockets of abecess occurred. He is 10 weeks since he went into the hospital and no issues. Sometimes he feels some tightness down there but it is very minor and is probably his organs getting back to their normal position after the plastering effect he had with the walled off condition.

I walked around with a burst apendix for a good 2 weeks. Doctors thought i was lying. I was 15 so i didnt really realise how bad it actually was until now. Im only looking into it because of a paper im writting for my uni course.

I too had a similar experience when I was 9 years old. All the same pain, misdiagnosed intestinal flu, tubes in my stomach, etc. I had the Last Rites performed over me by a sympathic priest in the Catholic hospital I was in. I am not Catholic. This was in 1958. No cat scans, etc.A year later I had to have repairative surgery for torn stitches in my abdomen from the rotted tissue.
17 years later, 5 months after the birth of our 1st child, I had horrible pains in my abdomen. I was really against drs. by this time, but knew I had to go to the ER. Misdiagnosed again and sent home with antibiotics for a ‘kidney infection’. I told them I had had a kidney infection before and this was nothing like one. A week later, a chiroprater finally took an X-Ray and saw a colon blockage. I had a colonic and began throwing up feces. I was rushed across town to a specialist and was operated on within the hour on a Friday afternoon. I had scar tissue grown around my colon that was blocking it. If you have had abdomenal surgery and ever, EVER have more pain like mentioned-scream as loud as you can to the drs!! The dr. I went to was the same one that had operated on me as a child and I told everyone else of my previous surgery, to no avail.
I owe the successful births(all at home-I really, really do not like drs and hospitals)of my 5 children to the fact that I have been dilagent in my pursued of natural and alternative medicine and lifestyle.
Peach and wellness to you all.

I am wondering if you are still around or if anyone is still around who might share some experience on recovery process and time.

I dont know if my experience is unique or not, but I had a burst appendix and they did NOT operate. Instead they hooked me to an IV and gave me loads of antibiotics and sent me home after 3 days with a bunch of prescriptions and told me to call and setup an appointment for next month.

They gave me no kind of instructions, such as whether I should go to school the next day, work, drive, anything. Is it typical to leave the hospital with the appendix still intact, on prescription narcotics, and your daily routine goes back to normal the next day?

I too suffered a ruptured appendix in 2008 and just now looked it up out of curiosity, and i am shocked to read how severe it is that once ruptured it could be fatal in hours! Fortunatley mine wa only ruptured for about 8 hours!

    But here’s my story:
I was in 7th grade and really hate missing school! But it was a saturday when i started feeling kind of odd i just hurt in my abdomen and just prefered to lay down. Then on sunday i spent the day taking warm baths, throwing up and enduring pain my mom thought was the flu as it was early december and flu season. Then the pain became much worse on monday and i stayed home from school sick. Well monday morning i had extreme pain i couldn’t sit stand, or do anything but lay and scream with extreme pain i called my parents when i was having my worse pain and they decided to call the local clinc andget an appoitment. The earliest they were able to get an appointment was later in the day. Well by the time my appointment came i was no longer in pain but my parents took me in anyway! Well good thing they did at the clinic they took urine sample and various other test and said it was very lokley my appendix had ruptured and i should be taken to a hospital immediatly! So my parents and i rushe to the hospotal and i drank the clear, chalky, nasty substance that is berrium(which helps with tje cat scans) on the way to the hospital! While me having motion sickness struggled with the task of drinking the berrium. So by the time we were to the hospital i felt very sick. When i got there i was attached to an iv and given more berrium. I was finally able to go in for the cat scan and sure enough my appensix had rupture and they called in the surrgeon who specified in this for an emergency appendectimy(spelling?) at about 1am tuesfay morning i was done with surrgery! I had the 3 small incisions. So for the 1st day i was only allowed to eat ice chips because it had ruptured and i still had extremly high blood counts and they were scared that perhaps their could still be some remains of what had ruptured. After my ice doet i was put on a liquid diet and ecentually eased to solid foods.becaise of high blood counts.and 4 different iv plasments because my veins were collapsing and one had started to get infected and an infected incision. after a week i was finally able to walk around, which was a struggle for the 1st 3-4 days i found it painful to get up. Even though my blood counts were still high they released me and i just had to come visit the surgeon at his office lile once or twice a week until my blood counts were to normal, if they were not normal in 2-3 weeks i would have to go in for a second surgery to remove what remained. Well in about a week- a week and a half my blopd counts were to normal and i was clear, just in time for christmas! I then was unable to do phyaical activity until january! And my infected incision took a while to heal but other than that have been clear of side effect or complications since! It was a very scary experience, and after reading some of your stories i feel extremly fortunate to have the medocal support i had and i am soo glad that we caught it or i guess i wouldn’t be here today! So as many others have said, do not ignor the Pain it only can make it worse.

    Hello:

I have had similar experiences with walking around with a ruptured appendix for possibly a couple weeks before it was finally figured out what was happening. It started with what I thought was an irritable bowel thing on a Friday evening. Bad stomach cramps and just a lot of bowel movements. Then it moved to really bad diarrhea. By the end of the weekend, I found myself with the worst GI flu I had ever had. Went to the doctor that following week, and she thought I had some sort of food poisoning/infection and gave me high doses of antibiotics. Things got better, for awhile at least.

During a CAT scan for something else unrelated to another medical problem I was working through, a mass was found in my pelvis, thought to maybe be cancer. I was lined up quickly with surgery. When they went in, expecting to maybe find a large ovarian tumor, they found a large abscess containing the remainder of the infection. My body had walled off the worst of it to keep the infection from spilling into me and likely saving my life.

Needless to say, I was relieved to find out no cancer when I woke up in the recovery room, but also shocked to hear they found a ruptured appendix. As I have since learned, these abscesses do form sometimes after things rupture, and had I not had the cat scan for the other thing, eventually that would have burst and perhaps taken my life.

I am now 2 weeks post surgery after 8 days in the hospital and on the mend. I wanted to say that sometimes these things we are told present in a certain way (pain on the right lower side, vomiting, etc.) are not always the same. It even fooled my pcp that did a full exam of me when the problems began.

I hope everyone here on this site is doing better and let your friends and family know what happened to you so they can be aware that a ruptured appendix can be different for everyone. When it doubt, check it out!

When i was 15 i walked around for about 2 weeks with an abscess the size of a cricket ball in my stomach caused by a ruptured apendix, (well they couldn’t find it during surgery so that’s what they say it was) My doctor told my parents i was faking it and that the pain would go away in time. If my Mum hadn’t of taken me to the doctors after all that time I don’t want to think what could of happened.

I am still recovering from my appendix bursting 7 days before I walked into an urgent care and being sent immediately to the ER. I also had CT and laparoscopic surgery. I spent 6 days in the hospital and have been recovering at home for 7 days so far. It has been difficult to eat food again and I have lost a lot of muscle mass. My arms and legs are puny. The incision they put a drain in is still draining a small amount of fluid a week after they took the drain out. I am terrified of having to go back in for infection.
