Sleeping is the IT thing on Saturday

Homer sleeping naked and oversleepingI woke up today at about 2 PM. That means that I slept for about 14 hours. Damn. That’s a lot of sleep. I only do it on Saturdays. I think it’s because I am so drained from the week so my body tries to make up for it on the weekend. It always shocks me when I wake up so late. I don’t usually plan it so it sorta pisses me off to have lost most of the day.

I have read in some places that too little sleep is bad and too much sleep is bad as well. What the heck? Can those darn scientists make their minds up?! Here is one of the articles I read on the sleep issue, this one is from Medical News Today. I recall a few years ago reading a news paper article about how the body needs to recharge after not getting sufficient rest. It also mentioned something about needing to get REM (Rapid Eye Movement) deep sleep. If not the body stays restless. I know I got my sleep in today. 🙂

It’s already 6 PM and I have barely done anything. I haven’t even worked out, but I will as soon as I finish this post. This means I am probably going to be awake all night too. Good thing I rented those Blockbuster movies. Speaking of which, I need to return those before they forcefully make me “buy” them.

OMG, I haven’t even turned on Sportscenter or any of the college football games. I did catch some of last nights South Florida vs. West Virginia game. USF wins again! I am officially a disgrace to all sports fans out there. I sincerely apologize for my lack of commitment.

Anyway, I’m going to keep this short, it’s Saturday and I want to spend some time with the family. Enjoy your Saturday folks.

I do the same thing during the week. Keep late hours and make up for it on the weekend. Your body knows how much sleep you need. Don’t feel bad about sleeping late.

  2. You must have been tired if you lost that much sleep. I have just been showing my husband your blog and it has inspired him to try to lose weight too. We have both put on weight over the last year or so and we’ll be tuning into your blog for some motivation.

well it’s true, too little sleep is bad, you body can’t recharge and regenerate, if you’re working out this will lead to less results, as the body builds up and repair itself to a certain extend during the rest stage.

Too much sleep, well haven’t you noticed that sleeping for a longer period doesn’t necessarily mean that you wake up more alert and feel that your body have gotten better rest?
Well that’s because you won’t be “sleeping” for that extra period, With that I mean the deep sleep the deep sleep and the REM (dream stage and the period when your eyes move rapidly) come in intervals throughout the night, but the body only needs around 8-10 hours of this, after that you’re in the REM stage, you don’t get the rest and recharging after that, you’re just dreaming, and your body is sort of online, and you are wasting energy.

This is why most people can feel tired and “wasted” after sleeping for a very long period like 12+ hours, and feel alert and nice after only sleeping for 8-10 hours.

The human body is amazing, mysteries with pretty much everything.

Well said. Sometimes folks feel sluggish after sleeping for too long.

I used to be able to sleep like that, but as I get older I can’t

  6. Yeah don’t sleep too much..Your body needs exercise otherwise your blood will not circulate in your boby.

    Better avoid other health problems.

  7. I remember reading reading about REM sleep in a psychology class in high school. Its a crazy concept, and supposedly it was discovered by accident when a doctor looked at his son while he was sleeping. He woke him up and the boy told him he was dreaming….

Your body needs about 8 hours sleep each night to function correctly and be healthy.
