Working Out with My Family

Over the last week or so I decided to institute a “Family Workout” routine. It basically consists of the entire family (me, my wife, and our 2 year old daughter) going to the park or going out for walks. Something, anything. My wife has been on me for months about going for walks, so this works perfect.

We have been going for walks and going to the park lately. We went to Wal-Mart and purchased some tennis rackets and tennis balls to play with at our community park. We’ve even set up a net in the backyard so that we can play volleyball and badminton.

The problem I am having is that I don’t get an intense enough workout from my family. I know it should be more about spending quality time with the family, but dammit I need to lose a lot of weight. So when I strap on my running shoes I expect to get my heart rate up. Today was an especially bad day because I couldn’t control myself. I was so disheartened with the lack of “exercising” during our park visit that I just wanted to come home and jump on the treadmill. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my beautiful ladies. But I want to exercise at MY pace.

I think I need to stop being so hard on myself, and my family. It’s not their job to make me lose weight, it’s their job to support me through this journey. I’m going to start treating “Family Workout” time as “Family Outside” time. That way I don’t put pressure on us. Yes, that will work. It will work perfectly. Bwahahahaha! That’s my evil laugh for those that don’t know.

I have noticed that I do break a sweat when we go out together, so that’s gonna have to be good enough now. At least until my daughter grows up and starts wanting to go out for runs with me.

YES! I wholeheartedly agree! I want to walk with the kids and hubby and bike with them, but they can’t keep up with what I need to do to get the weight off. SO I do two workouts. One is for me, I sweat my you know what’s off (that is if I HAD you know what’s) and the other I consider fitness training for my family and I am the trainer. You are setting a great example, just don’t let it replace your usual workout.

I figured it was time to get the family moving and make all aspects of my life beneficial to my progress.

  4. What about bike riding? I, too, have started incorporating the family and since my husband is the fit one, it is a bit of a struggle to keep up with him. Especially considering we have a few good sized hills on our route. Altogether there are four of us. We have my son (6 years) on a trailer bike, on the back of my husband’s bike, and my daughter (2years) in a bike seat, on the back of mine. Feel free to disregard the advice as you didn’t necessarily ask for it.
by the way… I so knew that was your evil laugh 😉

      My evil laugh prevails!!!

I love bike riding and used to do it often. But for now I am way too heavy and after about 15 minutes my butt starts hurting. So, for now I am off the bikes. lol.

  5. yeah… I hate to say I know, by experience, what you mean about the butt thing. At least you know that is a temporary problem.

Good post and good plan! We do some kind of family “get moving” activity each night and I consider it dessert to my main meal of my run or bike. It does make it more enjoyable.

Does the park have a workout route along the paths – adding those into the walk may not get your heart rate up, but will give you a lot of muscle exercises that you would otherwise miss. Even if they don’t, you can make up your own so you can spend time and get the workout. Spend some time thinking and a little creativity should help. I used to bring 5 lb weights with me on my walks and doing arm exercises over the entire walk will give you a huge workout (although you won’t be able to use your arms for the rest of the day.)

not really it does not. back home there was one and I loved it. I would jog around the path twice and stop and do the individual stations.

    @ Israel

Totally irrelevant, but I see you are running Google Adsense on your website. Does it make some money in the wealthy niche?

  9. Keep up the work out …. its the base of every sport
